Learning

One of the most important things to do in Eretz Yisroel is to learn torah. With yeshivos and seminaries on every corner, there's no excuse in the world not to set aside some time for learning. My first shabbos in Israel, an English girl named Melissa told me about the seminary she had been attending: She'arim. She encouraged me to take a look at the school. The next day, I did.

She'arim is a tiny school which is run out of two apartments on Rechov Agassi in Har Nof. During the spring and summer there were about thirty girls attending. All English speaking, and half of them were not American. Most of the girls were in their twenties, some were married, some were ba'alei teshuva, some lived in Israel while others were just visiting... as you can see it was a diverse group. The atmosphere was very warm and open. It was a wonderful place to be.

And the learning was great. Sunday and Thursday afternoons Rabbi Weiden taught us very practical hilchos shabbos. Rabbi Kagan gave two weekly lectures on the parsha. His style reminded me of Rabbi Gradon. Monday and Wednesday mornings we learned "Tiferes Yisroel" by the Maharal with Mrs. Gitty Appel. In the spring, Rebbetzin Pavlov, She'arim's founder and director, taught us "Sefer Mevaser Tov" by the previous Bialer Rebbe. It is a very deep book about the Imahos. In the summer, Rebbetzin Pavlov taught one of my favorite stories from Tanach: Eliyahu on Har Carmel.

The morning classes always began with chavrusa learning. I was more advanced than almost all the other students in the class, but the school went out of their way to be sure to bring in girls to learn with me. Thank you to Sara Levy and Rivka Sinowitz, I miss you guys!
