Yemin Moshe

My frequent visits to Women In Green and the Kotel brought me to spend a lot of time walking through the Yemin Moshe neighborhood. I remember being told by a tour guide last time I was in Israel that Yemin Moshe, situated just outside the walls of the Old City, was a rather undesirable place to be before 1967 (during the Jordanian occupation). Not so anymore - today Yemin Moshe is one of Yerushalayim's most beautiful areas.

A little history: Yemin Moshe is named for Sir Moses Montefiore. Founded in 1892, it was one of the first Jewish neighborhoods to be built outside of the Old City. The neighborhood is easily recognized by the landmark Windmill which Montefiore himself built in 1857.

I confess to being more than a little obsessed with the Windmill. My first few weeks in Israel, the Windmill was missing its blades. I happened to be walking by the day the blades were put back on. That operation was immortalized in the week's newspaper:

[Fixing the windmill]
Putting the blades back on Montefiore's Windmill

Here are a few more images of Yemin Moshe.
