Though way before my time, I am told that Yiddish theater was alive and well in the 1950's and 60's. "The Kosher Widow" was a musical comedy starring Molly Picon, with music by Sholom Secunda. It opened at the Anderson Theatre on 4th Street and 2nd Avenue right after the High Holidays 1960 and closed mid January 1961 after a 20 week run.

Songs included in "The Kosher Widow" are: Gantz Long Island Redt, An Akteritzeh, Oib S'iz Bashert, Di Belles fun Belle Harbor, Am Yisroel Chai, Mazel Tov, M'Nemt Eich Oif Der Hutska, Ich Darf Dich, and a drinking song, Le Chayim.

Here's a funny stanza from Le Chayim:

Toyznt vayber hot gehat
Shloyme hameylekh der kliger.
Fargest nisht az tsa yedn vayb
Hot ir oykh gekrign a shviger!

And a rough translation:

A thousand wives were had by King Solomon the wise. But don't forget that with every wife He also acquired a mother-in-law! [Drinking Song Text in Yiddish]
Yiddish oysyes were made possible
by Rafael Finkel's Yidishe Shraybmashinke.

Okay, my translation's not particularly poetic, and Yiddish jokes never sound the same in English anyway, but hopefully it'll get you started.
